Program Overview
The Spirit Elementary Dual Language Immersion Program provides students the opportunity to learn English and Spanish while maintaining high academic standards. All instruction in English and Spanish is aligned with state standards and provides students literacy and content instruction in both languages.
Students experience half of their academics in English and the other half in Spanish, allowing them to naturally acquire both languages through meaningful interactions and authentic practice.
Students develop bilingual skills and cross-cultural competencies necessary for success in an ever-changing global society and economy.
Student Expectations
- Participate actively in both English and Spanish instruction.
- Use the designated language of instruction during lessons.
- Demonstrate respect for both languages and cultures.
- Complete assignments and projects in the language assigned by the teacher.
- Read regularly in both English and Spanish.
- Maintain positive attendance, as consistent participation is essential for language development.
Program Procedures
Enrollment Commitment
- Students enrolling in the Dual Language Program are encouraged to remain in the program throughout their elementary experience whenever possible.
Assessment & Progress Monitoring
- Student progress is monitored regularly in both English and Spanish.
- Assessments may include classroom performance, reading and writing assessments, language proficiency measures, and district/state assessments.
Classroom Environment
- Value and celebrate both languages equally.
- Promote collaborative learning and student interaction.
- Foster a welcoming environment where all students feel respected and supported.
- Encourage students to become confident risk-takers in language learning.
